Snowbird Travel Checklist
Here is a handy checklist for snowbirds travelling to warmer climes this winter:
- Stop deliveries (newspapers, etc.)
- Arrange to have a neighbour park their car in your driveway, to give the appearance that your home is occupied.
- Put a hold on your mail at the Post Office or have someone stop by and empty your mailbox daily.
- Check your homeowner insurance policy. Many insurers require that a home be checked every day or so while you are away. Arrange for a trusted person to pop in as required.
- Plan for snow removal.
- Set up a timed lighting system.
- Leave house key with trusted neighbor or relative.
- Empty refrigerator of anything that won’t keep.
- Take out garbage/recycle just before you leave.
- Turn off lights; unplug appliances.
- Set thermostat.
- Store valuables in safety deposit box or safe place.
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Learn how to retrieve your messages from a remote phone.
- If you have a security system, make sure your emergency contact knows your plans and has a key to your house. Notify the security-monitoring centre that you will be away.
- Take measures to reduce risk of frozen pipes in the winter (have them monitored for safety and insurance purposes).
- Set window shades, blinds or drapes for a lived-in look.
- Only mention your travel plans to people you trust, and avoid posting your plans on social media.
