Shopping Tips For New Flooring

Once you’ve decided to replace flooring in your home, the real task is narrowing down the choices. New materials and design options abound, so shopping will be easier if you begin by jotting down your flooring needs. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Does the current flooring need to be removed?
  • What material is the sub-floor and is it level?
  • Does the area you are covering flow into other rooms?
  • Will food or beverages be consumed in this area?
  • Will pets and young children use the room?
  • Are there allergy concerns in the household?
  • Are there heavy furniture pieces in the room, or a piano, which could damage the flooring?
  • Does the area adjoin exterior entrances where moisture and dirt could be tracked in?
  • Does the room have direct exposure to sunlight which could fade the flooring material?
  • Is there the potential for moisture in the room?
  • Do you have radiant-heated sub-floors?
  • What kind of look do you want to achieve? Is the decor formal or casual?

By asking yourself a few questions before you go shopping, you’ll be equipped to select the flooring material that marries form with function, making it the right choice for your home.
