April Home Work

The daffodils and tulips will soon start poking their heads out, beckoning gardeners and inspiring homeowners to get started on the annual spring yard cleanup. Here are a few other tasks to add to your April checklist:

April Home Work

1. Take advantage of a warm spring day to check out your eavestroughs. Clear out any debris that may have accumulated over the winter. Have broken hangers and split troughs repaired before the spring rains. In fact, take a walk in the rain and look at how your system is handling the water, checking for leaks and making sure water runoff is directed away from your home’s foundation.

2. If you had icicles hanging from the eavestroughs this winter, you should inspect your roof for damage caused by ice damming. Have a roofing specialist inspect your roofing system in the spring and have repairs made promptly.

3. Examine your home’s exterior to see how it has weathered a punishing winter. Look for cracks and other signs of moisture penetration. Also watch for blistering or peeling paint that could mask a more serious problem.

4. Take advantage of the occasional warm days in April to give your lawn a vigorous raking. Clean up the garden and turn the soil to ready it for spring planting next month.

5. Beat the spring rush by calling now for quotes on patios, deck repairs and landscaping before the contractors’ calendars start filling up. The sooner you get things underway, the more deck time you’ll have come summer!

6. Book an appointment this month to have your central air conditioning system checked and cleaned before the spring rush.

7. If you didn’t do it when Daylight Savings time arrived, make a point to check and change the batteries of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors this month.

8. April is the ideal time to call for quotes on energy-efficient replacement windows.

9. Take in your power garden tools for tuning and repair this month so they are ready to go when the warm weather arrives.

10. Give your home a fresh look by cleaning and decluttering. If your décor still looks tired, get quotes on a fresh coat of paint – it’s an inexpensive way to transform your interior.

11. If spring showers end up in your basement, now is the time to tackle the problem.
