This Summer, Keep Temperatures and Costs Low

Running your air conditioning can make your electricity bill skyrocket, but the alternative isn’t pretty, either. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can help your air conditioner run better and save money as the summer months creep up on us.

Older, Inefficient System
The cost of replacing your system can be recouped in lower energy bills. Currently, newly manufactured air conditioners must have a SEER rating of at least 13. An A/C system with a rating below that should be replaced with a new, more efficient unit.

Leaky, Dirty Ducts
Ductwork standards have changed for the better over time. If your home is older you could be facing up to a 30% air leakage rate, according to Toronto Hydro, leading to poor indoor air quality and reduced A/C performance. Have your ducts inspected regularly by a qualified HVAC professional to find and repair leaks, and save you money.

Thermostat Set Too Low
Lowering your thermostat to arctic temperatures will not cool your house faster, but it will force your air conditioner to work harder for longer. It costs you more, and your house ends up too cold for comfort. Install a smart thermostat, which will allow you to turn your A/C back on remotely about an hour before you’re due home, making your place cool and comfortable by the time you walk through the door.
