Shopping For An Energy Efficient Heating System

If the furnace in your home is approaching 10 years or older, it’s possible your energy dollars are going up in flames. Heating can up to 60 per cent of your annual energy use, so an inefficient furnace can cost you energy dollars. Upgrading to a high efficiency furnace can reduce your heating bills and have the added benefits of improved air quality, increased comfort, and reliable performance.

The energy folks at Hydro One recommend you consider replacing your furnace if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • The system is more than 10 years old.
  • The air quality in your home is dusty or dry.
  • The current system is noisy.
  • Rooms are chilly and difficult to heat.
  • The current system requires replacement of expensive parts.

When you are shopping for a new furnace, look for the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating on the Canadian EnerGuide label; the higher the rating, the more efficient the furnace. When looking at the cost, keep in mind that a furnace upgrade can save up to 25% on your annual heating/cooling bill.

Here are a few other furnace facts to consider:

  • Higher efficiency furnaces use less gas to do the same heating job. While an older unit might operate at less than 70 per cent efficiency, a new high-efficiency model will operate at up to 96 per cent.
  • Condensing gas furnaces are the most energy-efficient furnaces on the market with an “annual fuel utilization efficiency” AFUE rating of between 90 and 97 per cent. They use 33 to 38 per cent less energy than older models, and can save a homeowner with an old gas furnace about $300 a year. Condensing furnaces come in a variety of sizes and can be installed in the same location as the furnace being replaced, using the same ductwork.
  • High-efficiency furnaces are a good choice for homes that are greater than 2,000 square feet.
  • By adding insulation and upgrading your home’s weather-stripping, you might find a smaller furnace will do an efficient job of heating your home.

Your heating contractor can explain the options and advice you on the right furnace for your home. Upgrading your heating system is a wise investment that will pay off in less energy use, lower operating bills and increased comfort.
