Make February “Love Your Home” Month
After a green Christmas, we’re looking forward to an early spring, according to the Groundhogs. February is a good time to plan for future repairs and renovation projects. But homeowners also need to keep on top of home maintenance this month and watch for problems caused by winter weather.
- Take care to avoid piling snow against the house – the moisture could damage the siding and foundation.
- Keep the gas and other meters clear of snow and ice build-up.
- Use ice melter to keep walkways and porches safe for visitors.
- These long winter nights are the ideal time to plan your garden, update tired decor and get quotes on spring maintenance and renovation projects.
- Boost the efficiency of your heating system by cleaning air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators regularly. Clean or replace the furnace filter and humidifier filter this month.
- Look up and keep an eye open for signs of roof problems. If your attic is finished, check the plaster for stains. Call a roofing expert immediately to assess the problem and prevent further damage.
- While trees are dormant, have dead and diseased branches removed.
- If relaxing by the fire helps you pass winter nights, burn only dry, well-seasoned wood. It will lessen the build-up of creosote in the chimney.
- Periodically brush heavy snow off shrubs and evergreens to prevent damage.
