Keeping Out Unwanted House Guests
As the weather turns nasty this month, rodents, raccoons and other critters are on the prowl looking for warmer homes. Keep them out of your home by following these pest control tips from the City of Toronto:
- Check flashing around the chimney and have it capped to keep animals from nesting.
- Inspect all roof vents to make sure they are in good repair and are secure. (Screen vents where necessary.)
- Clean eavestroughs regularly to prevent a build-up of debris. Birds may nest there.
- Inspect all siding, fascia and general exterior for weak, damaged or rotten areas. Make the necessary repairs.
- Screen vents to prevent animals from gaining entry.
- Avoid using woodpiles, if possible. Many animals, such as skunks, rats, opossums, snakes, and others, choose these as ideal nesting sites or hideouts. Try to keep woodpiles in an enclosed area such as a garage or shed.
- Check for any holes or openings in windows and seal them.
- Window boxes should be filled with dirt or screened over.
- Make sure doors and windows close tightly, and that door sweeps fit snugly with no gaps.
- Keep barbecues clean and free of grease.
