When visitors step into your home, the foyer not only reflects your style, it creates a lasting first impression.

Decorators know the importance of an attractive, yet functional foyer. They also know that it is a high-traffic area which requires durable materials – no-wax flooring, pre-finished hardwood, washable paints – to keep it looking good and keep maintenance down.

Here are some tips from the pros on creating an inviting, easy-to-maintain front hall:

Less is more – Keep clutter and furnishings to a minimum. Make sure guests can step into the hallway and close the entrance door with no obstructions.

Mirrors do double duty – A mirror in the front hall mirror will brighten and visually enlarge the space, while allowing guests to do a quick check on appearance before entering or leaving the house. The trick with mirrors is to keep the size in proportion to the space.

Create warmth – Instead of a single overhead fixture, create warmth in the front hall with accent lighting. If there is room for a narrow console, adding a table lamp will make the space inviting. Wall sconces are another effective source of accent lighting in a small space.

Functional furniture – A chair or somewhere to sit to take boots on and off, or a table to place packages while you put your coat on, are essential pieces of furniture if you have the space. A front hall bench serves the purpose while adding storage space. Baskets tucked under console tables or benches are an attractive storage option. A narrow table with a bench stored below is an ideal solution for cramped hallways. If space is really limited, a stool tucked in the corner can provide storage and a place to sit.

Create flow – The floor and wall coverings in the front hall should be in sync with the rest of your home’s decor, to create a flow that welcomes guests.
