The ABCs of A/C
Looking forward to the summer but dreading coming home to a hot and stuffy house every day? An efficient central air conditioning system can make your home a refuge during the hot months of summer. Air conditioning works not only to lower the ambient temperature but to remove the humidity that makes the heat of a Toronto summer so oppressive.
If you are in the market for a central air conditioning system, the best place to start your research is by asking an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) professional for advice on which type of system is right for your home. A professional can recommend the correct unit for the size of your home. Keep in mind that air conditioner output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour, and it takes about 18 BTUs to cool one square foot of space. Generally, it is more efficient to have a smaller unit working at peak capacity than to have an oversized unit working inefficiently.
The system uses the existing ductwork of your hot air furnace to condition the air by controlling its temperature, moisture content, cleanliness and distribution. The evaporator, which cools the air, is installed in the furnace while the pump is installed outside. Keep in mind that the outside unit can be quite noisy, so compare noise ratings of the different models before you buy. Also consider the noise factor when determining where the unit will be located on your property.
Another factor to consider is the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of the various models; the higher the number, the more efficient the model.
Finally, before you buy make sure to ask about warranties, servicing, maintenance plans and installation costs.
