March HOMEwork
As we suffer through the end of a punishing winter, why not turn your thoughts to the sunny days ahead? Plan your garden, sketch ideas for that new deck, make a list of decorating projects and plan spring renovations. It is a lovely way to pass the long winter nights, and you’ll be organized and ready to roll when the warm weather finally arrives.
- Do you dream of gleaming hardwood floors? This is the month to do something about it! Have your hardwood floors repaired and refinished this month.
- If the view outside is dreary, replacing those dated, inefficient windows is the solution. March is a good time to call for quotes on energy-efficient replacement windows. It is one project that transforms your home inside and out while increasing energy efficiency.
- If you’ve been thinking of installing a new deck or patio, now is the time to gather information and get quotes from contractors before the rush in the spring. The more work you do now, the more time you’ll have to enjoy your new outdoor space this summer!
- Keep your walkways safe for visitors this month by using an ice melter.
- Clean or replace the humidifier and furnace filters this month.
- Keep the chimney clean during the rest of the heating season to maximize efficiency and minimize fire risk. Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood. Open the damper a half hour before lighting the fire to warm the chimney and improve the draw.
- Keep your humidistat below 40 per cent to reduce moisture damage this winter. Reduce the setting if you notice condensation and damp areas on walls or ceilings.
- Carefully remove snow and ice build-up around the outside gas meter.
