November Home Checklist
It’s official: the holiday countdown is on for homeowners. There is still time to check off some of those decorating and home improvement projects on your list in time for the holiday season, but the clock is ticking. There are also a number of home maintenance tasks that need to be done this month make sure your home is ready for winter:
- For safety and efficiency reasons, your heating system should be cleaned and inspected at least once a season. If you didn’t have it done last month, book your appointment this month.
- Have the chimney cleaned this month to make sure your fireplace is in safe working order.
- Check that the damper opens and closes smoothly and fits properly to prevent heat loss. Check inside the fireplace to make sure no bricks are loose or broken.
- Clear debris from gutters after the last leaves have fallen, and repair any splits or broken hangers. Clean gutters will help prevent ice damming from causing roof damage this winter.
- Don’t forget to drain and close off the outdoor water supply before the first frost.
- Clean your lawnmower and other garden tools before storing.
- Keep the heat in this winter. Check the weatherstripping and caulking around windows and doors and repair or replace.
- Check that hot air registers are clean and not blocked.
- Order your firewood and ice melter this month.
- Have your snowblower tuned, cleaned and ready to go this month.
