All Fired Up For Fall

One of the comforts of autumn is a fire crackling in the grate on a cool, fall evening. Knowing that your wood-burning system is operating safely is another comfort. Here are a few suggestions to consider before firing up your system this season:

• Changes to your wood-burning system, such as adding or changing a wood stove or modifying a chimney, can affect your insurance coverage. Check your policy and contact your agent.
• Consider adding an extra smoke alarm near the exit to the room in which the fireplace or wood stove is located.
• Keep an approved ABC fire extinguisher within easy reach of the fireplace.
• Turn down the thermostat before lighting the fire, to prevent heated air from going up the chimney.
• Keep heat-proof gloves within handy reach of the fireplace or stove. If a log or spark rolls out of the fireplace, you can safely pick it up.
• Burn only properly seasoned wood to minimize creosote buildup, a common cause of chimney fires.
• Have the chimney cleaned annually by a certified professional.
