September Homework
As autumn approaches, September is the time to get a head start on home winterizing tasks. Enjoy the beautiful fall days by getting outside and checking some jobs off the list.
- Do a visual roof inspection. If you notice lifting, curling or missing shingles, call a roofing professional to make repairs.
- Have the eavestroughs cleaned after the last of the leaves have fallen, to prevent ice damming and winter roof damage.
- Check to see that the ductwork leading to and from the heat recovery ventilator is in good shape, the joints are tightly sealed and any duct insulation and plastic duct wrap is free of tears and holes.
- Replace window screens with storm windows. Better still, have a quote on replacing them with energy-efficient thermal windows.
- Check weather-stripping around doors and windows and repair or replace as required.
- Brighten your home, inside and out, by having the windows cleaned this month.
- Book your furnace cleaning this month so your system will be tuned and ready to go at the flick of a switch, when the first cold snap hits.
- Think ahead to get your house ready for the holidays. Are house guests in the forecast? Now is the time to have the guestroom redecorated, the bathroom renovated, carpets cleaned, and interior painting done to prepare for the holidays.
- Book a chimney cleaning and inspection this month and order firewood for the heating season ahead.
- Help electric baseboard heaters perform more efficiently by vacuuming to remove dust.
