Hardwood Floor Care
A hardwood floor that is properly installed, finished and maintained, will last a lifetime. The key to lasting hardwood beauty is the quality of the finish: if it is doing its job, your floor will look good for years to come.
To protect the finish on your floor, here are some tips on caring for your hardwood floors:
- Place floor mats at entrances to trap dirt.
- Sweep floors weekly with brooms that have fine, exploded ends that trap dust and grit.
- Vacuum your hardwood floor weekly with a multi-surface vacuum.
- Water and liquids can damage the floor’s finish. Wipe up spills, pet accidents, and other mishaps immediately.
While regular maintenance should keep your hardwood floors in good shape, you should call a professional before attempting repairs if:
- The finish is cracking, forming a pattern resembling alligator skin or peeling.
- There are deep gashes, cuts, dents or burns in the finish film.
- Nail polish or polish remover has been spilled on the hardwood.
- Oil-based paint has dried on the surface.
- The hardwood surface is marred by magic markers.
- You are unsure as to what kind of finish film (shellac, varnish, lacquer, etc.) is on your hardwood product.
- There are squeaks in your hardwood floors, whether carpeted or not.
