Avoid Snow Jobs
If you are thinking about hiring out snow removal this year, there are some steps you can take to avoid being snowed. Complaints and news reports about snow removal scams are on the rise, according to the Ministry of Consumer Services. Typically, the scam artist takes payment for the whole season, then never comes back.
If you’re thinking about a snow removal contract:
- If you live outside Toronto, check with your municipality to see if snow removal operators are required to have a licence (Toronto does not require a license.) If so, ask to see the operator’s licence.
- Always check the reputation of snow removal suppliers with family, friends, the Better Business Bureau, or visit the ministry’s Consumer Beware website at http://www.consumerbeware.mgs.gov.on.ca.
Tips to avoid being scammed
- Make sure you have a written agreement.
- Don’t pay for the whole season (unless you have a relationship with an established operator).
- Restrict any deposit for work to no more than 10 per cent.
If you’ve paid for service you’re not getting
- Write to the operator outlining your complaint.
- If there is no response, file a complaint with the ministry online at http://www.sse.gov.on.ca/mcs/en/Pages/Complaint_Steps_to_File.aspx.
