Transitional Kitchens Leading Design Trends

Transitional kitchens – blending elements of traditional and contemporary kitchens – are leading the trends for kitchen design in early 2016.

Transitional kitchens incorporate modern elements like stainless steel appliances with traditional interior design. As part of the trend, Shaker-style cabinets are enjoying a revival of popularity, due to their adaptability with almost any style of kitchen, including country, traditional, and contemporary.

While choosing white, black, and grey hues to highlight the kitchen cannot be said to be new, those colours still figure strongly into this year’s trends, simply because of their versatility. Unlike flashier colours, which can lose their appeal quickly, these colours stand the test of time, and are still enjoying significant support among interior designers and home remodelers.

Slide-out shelving is a kitchen strategy which is both clever and functional, making use of available space for necessary storage. Pots, pans, and cleaning accessories can all be stowed under the sink or elsewhere, with sliding shelves that are easily accessed on demand.

Hardwood flooring is becoming a strong alternative to recently favoured systems like laminates and tiles, and is appearing in planks six inches wide and more. Antique wooden flooring for the kitchen is also a significant trend in 2016.

Farmhouse sinks, also known as apron sinks, are trending in remodelled kitchens. Their compelling size alone makes them a focal point in the kitchen, and since they are now available in a huge variety of sizes and styles, they are very versatile in how they can be used in almost any style of kitchen.

Technology is also featured in 2016 kitchen remodelling trends, with the general move toward “smart” devices moving into the kitchen. Having coffee automatically brewed for the morning wake-up is just one example, but programmed lighting and heat levels can also be managed in a modernized kitchen. Other appliances can also be included in the smart kitchen management scheme, providing consistent and effortless advantages to remodelers.
