Homeowners of older homes planning a renovation would be wise to take electrical capacity into consideration in their project plans. Multiple computers, electronic devices, hot tubs, pool pumps, large-screen televisions, home theatres, air conditioners and large appliances will all put a strain on your home’s electrical system. Here are some tips from the Electrical Safety Authority and design expert Kimberley Seldon to make power a part of your renovation:

  • Along with the standard floor plans, make sure your contractor has a lighting plan. The plan should outline electrical and switch placement for ambient, task, decorative, and accent lighting. An interior designer can create a detailed plan that includes these details and more.
  • Make sure your electrical tradesperson is qualified and licensed.
  • Before starting the renovation, select your lighting fixtures and decide on placement. This will give the contractor a clear idea of electrical requirements and keep the renovation process running smoothly.
  • Make sure the renovation is done right. This may mean replacing old and worn wiring and updating your electrical panel, while renovations are underway.
